CHARACTER NAME: Euphemia li Britannia
CHARACTER AGE: 16
SERIES: Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion
CHRONOLOGY: Episode 22, before the SAZ incident
CLASS: Hero
HOUSING: Randomize!
BACKGROUND: Euphemia is the third daughter of Charles zi Britannia, 98th Emperor of the Holy Britannian Empire. Britannia is an alternate-universe version of the United States, in a timeline when the American War of Independence failed thanks to the treachery of Benjamin Franklin and Napoleon conquered Britain, forcing the British royal family to move across the Atlantic to re-establish themselves in a new homeland. By the modern day, Britannia has conquered nearly one third of the globe (all of North and South America, many of the islands in the Pacific and Northern Atlantic, as well as a tribute empire Euro Britannia in modern-day Russia). The Emperor, Charles, is a harsh and ruthless man and a strict social Darwinist who believes that might makes right and that Britannia has proven its righteousness by its military success.
In comparison, Euphemia (or "Euphie") is a kind-hearted, gentle girl who tries to treat everyone equally regardless of whether they're Britannian or a "Number" (aka a resident of a conquered country, renamed to be one of Britannia's many Areas-- for instance, New Zealand is Area 9, so New Zealanders would be Nines). As Emperor Charles has many wives and consorts-- the particle between a royal prince or princess' given name and surname identifies their mother-- she has many half-brothers and half-sisters, all of whom are said to adore her. She is one of only two known full-sibling pairs (the other being the series' protagonist Lelouch vi Britannia and his younger sister Nunnally) with her older sister Cornelia li Britannia, the Empire's second princess and chief General of the Imperial Army.
Prior to the main events in Code Geass, Euphemia was very close to her half-siblings Lelouch and Nunnally, though they were exiled and banished to Japan after the assassination of their mother, Empress Marianne. Lelouch and Nunnally were presumed killed in the Second Pacific War in which Britannia invaded, conquered and ultimately occupied Japan, renaming it "Area 11." Unbeknownst to Euphemia or any of the other royalty, the two survived and changed their identities, becoming simple students at a school for Britannians living in Japan.
After the masked Japanese terrorist leader Zero kills Euphemia's older half-brother, the third prince Clovis la Britannia, who was Viceroy of Area 11, Cornelia is installed as the new Viceroy in the hopes of putting down Zero and the rest of the rebellion to ensure peace. Euphemia is taken out of school to join her sister as her Sub-Viceroy, though the responsibility and duties do not sit well with Euphemia's kind heart.
During a hostage situation, Euphemia comes face to face with Zero, the murderer of her half-brother, who holds her at gunpoint but does not kill her. From the things he says and the way he acts, Euphemia correctly deduces that Zero is in fact her presumed-dead half-brother Lelouch. She upends the normal Britannian ways when she selects as her personal royal knight Suzaku Kururugi, a Japanese boy who works in the Britannian military as an "Honorary Britannian," becoming very close with him despite the differences in their social stations.
Realizing that trying to defeat Zero and his Black Knights by force would be almost impossible, Euphemia uses her authority as Sub-Viceroy to create a Japanese "Special Administrative Zone," in which the Japanese people would be allowed to call themselves Japanese instead of Elevens and would be allowed to largely govern themselves. This completely derails Lelouch's plans and he is about to agree to join her and help her work towards peaceful equality when tragedy strikes: Lelouch loses control of his mysterious "Geass" power, which allows him to give a person an order they must obey no matter what (even "kill yourself"), while explaining to Euphemia some of the horrendous things he could force someone to do. As a result, he accidentally gives Euphemia the order to "Kill the Japanese," resulting in the gentle Euphemia ordering her troops to commit a massacre of the peacefully assembled civilians.
In the resulting chaos, Euphemia is mortally wounded, and dies after being told by her knight Suzaku that the SAZ had been a success after all. She would later be reviled as the infamous "Massacre Princess," whose actions plunged Area 11 into open rebellion.
However, she will be coming to MoM before any of that last part happens.
PERSONALITY: Euphemia is a kind and gentle soul, who endeavors to treat everyone equally regardless of their origin. She is said to be beloved by all of her vast, vast royal family-- even the stone-hearted Charles refers to her with the affectionate nickname "Euphie," despite her rejection of all of his own principles and belief about how the world should work. She has a complicated relationship with the idea of authority; while she frequently bucks Britannian tradition and acts on her own to do things like create the Japanese SAZ and appoint a Number as her personal knight, she also dutifully listens to her older sister and understands her place in the Britannian royal heirarchy.
It would be a mistake to mistake Euphemia's sweet nature as indicative of weakness; she demonstrates repeatedly that her courage is on par with that of her warrior older sister. When terrorists hijack a hotel she's visiting undercover, she reveals her identity to prevent another hostage from being harmed, knowing that the terrorists will treat her as a much more valuable bargaining chip herself. She steals a Knightmare Frame (Code Geass' resident giant robots) to rescue Suzaku after he's been ordered on a suicide action to trap Zero with a missile barrage incoming, and she-- on foot-- walks into a Knightmare duel to use her royal authority to demand the combatants stop.
Despite a relentlessly cheerful exterior, Euphemia bears a deep sadness at the violent state of the world and its inequality. She mourns her siblings Clovis, Lelouch and Nunnally (unaware that the latter two are alive) and connects with Suzaku over the death of his father, Japan's previous prime minister. Her ideal world is one in which nobody has to lose their loved ones ever again.
Euphemia deeply enjoys life, and sometimes acts rather capricious; she first meets Suzaku when he catches her after climbing out of her window and lies that she's being "chased by bad guys" to get him to spend the day with her. She meets an injured stray cat and convinces it to not flee from her and Suzaku by meowing at it, bandaging its paw. She conceals her identity, enjoying the ability to walk around with someone who doesn't know who she is.
Some believe her to be naive, and there's an element of truth in that. She believes human nature is fundamentally just and kind, and often trusts people easily; she spends her day with Suzaku upon first meeting him, knowing only that he's just been acquitted for the murder of her older brother. She trusts Zero not to kill her, even though he was the one who killed her brother, before she even finds out that he's Lelouch. It's this trust that ultimately leads to her ruin, because she wants to involve Lelouch-as-Zero in the process of her SAZ.
Euphemia's closest relationship in Code Geass is with Suzaku, the Honorary Britannian who she chooses as her knight. The two spend much time together, eventually forming the bonds of a romantic relationship; she says she likes his sad eyes and his stubbornness and the way cats don't like him. She commands him to love her, declaring her own love in the process. Still, their relationship is an ultimately chaste one due to her tragic death in the SAZ massacre shortly afterwards.
She is also extremely close with her older full-sister, Cornelia. Cornelia is a cold and calculating person suited for the battlefield, but despite the twelve-year age gap between them has doted on Euphemia since Euphemia was a baby. It is with Euphemia that the normally distant Cornelia actually opens up and shows a warm, even affectionate side. Euphemia sees the kindness hidden behind her sister's rough exterior, though in turn she acts as a weakness in Cornelia's armor, a point at which Cornelia can be threatened.
The third most important relationship Euphemia has in the series, and perhaps the most complex, is her relationship with Lelouch. As children, Lelouch, Nunnally and Euphemia were all extremely close (Lelouch says that Euphie was the first girl he ever loved, and she and Nunnally would argue about who would get to marry him when they were older). Euphemia is overjoyed to realize that Lelouch and Nunnally are both still alive, but as Lelouch is the terrorist Zero, and she is the Sub-Viceroy of Area 11, they're now on opposite ends of a conflict. Euphemia repeatedly tries to win over Lelouch with reasoning instead of force, hoping for a peaceful resolution to the Black Knights' rebellion. Ultimately, she would have succeeded in finally convincing him to pursue peace, if it weren't for the untimely accidental Geass order that sealed her fate.
POWER: Euphemia will have two powers and an item:
*Complete immunity to all mental effects: Mind control, mind-reading, hallucinations, etc.
*The ability to heal any wound by putting her hands on it.
*The experimental Lancelot Knightmare Frame. However, she has no training in Knightmares beyond their basic operation, and no combat experience.

Hello, everyone! This is a really exciting adventure, isn't it? To be in a brand-new place like this, with people we never could've met anywhere else! I don't think many people get an opportunity like this. At least, if they have, I've never heard of it.
My name is Euphemia li Britannia. [She pauses, and for a moment it seems like she's debating on saying something else] ...but you can all call me Euphie!
I found something really quite interesting when I was reading up on the history of this place. Did you know that in this reality, Washington's Rebellion actually succeeded? It's true! That's why this country is called the United States of America. And-- and Napoleon never invaded the British Isles, either! I wonder if that explains why everything is so different?
